Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN)

Important information


  • The next courses are scheduled for  December 2017.
  • The calibration courses are open for all orthodontic staff, although it will be beneficial if attendees have some prior knowledge of the indices and dental terminologies before attending the course. Relevant articles can be found by typing in the web address: www.esas.nu/main/info_index.php
  • Cancellation more than 14 working days prior to the start of the course - there will be a refund minus an administration charge of £55. Cancellation less than 14 working days – there will be no refunds.
  • These courses do not guarantee calibration – in the last 5 years over 80% of attendees have successfully  calibrated in all indices.
  • Attendance on each day attracts 6 hours of verifiable CPD.
  • Each course costs £300
This calibration course will provide training in the use of both the Aesthetic and Dental Health Components of the IOTN for assessing treatment need.

PAR Index

Peer Assessment Rating (PAR Index)
This calibration course will provide training  in the use of the PAR Index which is used to assess the outcome of treatment.


Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON)
This calibration course will provide training in the use of the ICON useful to ass orthodontic treatment need, complexity, outcome and cost-effectiveness of care.
    Calibration Courses in the use of Occlusal Indices     
  • The Occlusal Index Course has been running for 29 years.  The modern calibration course provides the attendees with training in the morning and on-site feedback in the afternoon.
  • The use of IOTN and PAR are currently a contractual requirement of orthodontic practice in the NHS in England and Wales and many other countries.
  • The ICON is recognised as one of the best indices to assess orthodontic treatment need and outcome. 
  • Bespoke Introductory courses for treatment need and outcome without calibration can be arranged.
